Healthy coral reefs are colorful and full of life.

What are coral reefs?

Coral reefs are underwater ecosystems also called as "rainforests of the sea". Most coral reefs were formed after the last glacial period less than 10 000 years ago, when melting ice caused sea level to rise.

Coral reefs are built by coral polyps as they form layers of calcium carbonate beneath their bodies. Polyps extend their tentacles at night and capture zooplankton and small fish to digest it in their stomachs. The corals that build reefs are known as “hard” or “reef-building” corals. Soft corals, such as sea fans and sea whips, do not produce reefs. They are flexible organisms without skeleton and sometimes resemble plants or trees.

The polyps offer shelter to the species living underwater and create lots of energy to the corals through photosynthesis. The coralline algae, that live inside the corals' tissues, use photosynthesis to produce nutrients, many of which they pass to the corals' cells. The corals in turn emit waste products in the form of ammonium, which the algae consume as a nutrient. When polyps die, they serve as foundations for new corals, in which the new algae continue to provide vital ecological functions such as stabilization of reef structure, production of tropical sands and nutrient retention and recycling.

Scientists generally divide colar reefs into four classes:

1) fringing reefs
2) barrier reefs
3) atolls
4) patch reefs

Fringing reefs grow near the coastline around islands and continents. They are separated from the shore by narrow lagoons and are the most common type of reef that we see. Barrier reefs also parallel the coastline but are separated by deeper and wider lagoons. At their shallowest point, they can reach the water’s surface forming a “barrier” to navigation. Atolls are rings of coral that create protected lagoons and are usually located in the middle of the sea. Atolls form when islands surrounded by fringing reefs sink into the sea or the sea level rises around them, while reefs still continue to grow and eventually form circles with lagoons inside. Patch reefs are small, isolated reefs that grow up from the open bottom of the island platform or continental shelf. They usually occur between fringing reefs and barrier reefs and vary greatly in size. Very rarely patch reefs reach the surface of the water.

Where corals live?

Corals prefer clear and shallow water, where lots of sunlight filters through to their symbiotic algae. Too much suspended material floating in the water blocks the sunlight necessary for the algae's photosynthesis. The optimum temperature for most coral reefs is 26–27 °C (79–81 °F). It is possible to find coral reefs at depths of up to 90 meters, but reef-building corals grow poorly below 18–27 meters.

Corals need salt water to survive, so they hardly survive near river openings. Most reefs are located between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, in the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. Corals are also found in Florida and southern Japan. Though coral reefs make up barely 0,1 percent of the ocean, over 25 percent of the ocean's animals thrive there.

What causes coral reef destruction?

Over-fishing destroys coral reef's natural habitat. Especially bottom-trawling is one of the greatest threats to coral reefs in areas with cold water. Careless tourism such as boating, diving and snorkeling, with people touching reefs, stirring up sediment and collecting coral invades coral's biodiversity, not to mention urban and industrial waste, industrial mining, agrochemicals and oil pollution. Some pollutants such as runoff from farming increase the level of nitrogen in seawater and block the polyps causing an overgrowth of algae.

Although, coral reefs in the Gulf of Eilat seem to be particularly resistant to global warming, corals cannot survive if the water temperature is too high. Climate change alone has already led to corals bleaching massively, as in Australia's Great Barrier Reef, and damage is predicted to increase in frequency and severity.

Damaged coral recover slowly, thus the reefs’ conditions should be optimal and nature conservation a high priority in the coming decades. If the algae loss is prolonged and the stress continues, coral eventually dies.

Bleaching occurs when the dying reefs slowly lost their algae and finally turn white.

Send your answers to the following questions via Message Center. You don't have to wait for a logging permission. I'll let you know, if your answers are in some part incorrect.

1. List at least three reasons why corals tend to survive here. In what way the locals have already preserved these fragile reefs?

2. Go to the beach at given coordinates. What type of reef do you think Eilat Coral forms? If you have a chance to scuba dive or snorkel, describe how does the coral reef look now. Please, remember NOT to touch the coral in the water. Alternatively, look for old coral bones at the beach and describe their colour, size and surface. In case the entrance to the beach is closed, you may find your answers at the nearby Underwater Observatory.

OPTIONAL: Take a picture of you and/or your GPS device at the given coordinates and attach it into your log.
2022-11-26T20:00:00ZFound itForiwaaThe purpose of my trip from Norway to Israel was to experience the exciting bird life in Israel. Together with two friends we were first in the northern parts of Israel, Jordandalen, Hula Valley and the Golan Hights. We decided to take a day off from the bird watching to visit Jerusalem. In Jerusalem we visited the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, The Western Wall, and the Tempel Mount. A nice walk in the streets, and a delicious meal with local food was also a part of the visit in the old city of Jerusalem. From Jerusalem we drove down to the Dead See with a visit to Ein Gedi and Masada before we continued to Eilat. On the way back to Ben Gurin Airport we also stopped for some hours at Mitzpe Ramon. Thanks to Paakayttaja for creating this cache and providing me with new knowledge about coral reefs and this one i particular :)2022-03-28T19:00:00ZFound itNighthawk700I'm back in Israel for another visit. This time it was very productive, I was able to knock several items off my bucket list, including: Running the full Jerusalem Marathon, participating in my nephew's bar mitzvah, visiting Eilat, the Dead Sea, and Masada. During the last three, I made sure to grab a few geocaches.
One bucket list item I was really hoping to knock off here in Eilat was scuba diving. In the US, you need to take lots of lessons and get a license before you can do it. In Eilat, you can take a brief introductory course, and dive with an instructor (only down to about 6 feet, 2 meters, but that's plenty). Unfortunately for me though, I wound up with an ear infection, and was told by a friend (and fellow geocacher) who is a former diving instructor that it would be a bad idea to dive with the infection. Bummer. But, I did manage to get to the nearby Underwater Observatory Park, and went down to the lower level where I was able to see some coral, along with several schools of fish and other sea life. This observatory is not fenced in, the fish want to be here, observing the silly humans. ;-) I asked Paakayttaja if I could log the Earthcache based on the views here, and was kindly given permission. I'm including several photos from inside and outside of the observatory. As you can probably tell, it was a bit windy! Thanks for the Earthcache! Hopefully next time I'm in the area, the ears will be fine and I can get in the water to see (but not touch!!) the coral up close. 2022-03-24T19:00:00ZFound itIrisvoConstruction works going on here.
Den čtvrtý jsme před odletem navštívili pěknou oázu palem a Timna park. Byl to neuvěřitelný zážitek. Nádherné skály a úžasné světlo. Nemělo chybu.
Celkově to byl moc povedený víkend.
Visited during a great long weekend in Israel. During our stay we visited Ramon reservation and after visiting the beautiful valley we continued to the Dead Sea. It really floats and itches nicely.
The next day we went to Red Canyon National Park, which we went through. It was great. On our way back to the south, we stopped by a well in a deep valley, where we went down an adrenaline and dusty road. When we arrived to the sea we bathed in it. It was full of beautiful corals and very interesting and colorful fish.
The fourth day we visited a nice oasis of palm trees and Timna park. It was an incredible experience. Beautiful rocks and amazing light. There was no mistake.
Overall, it was a very good weekend.

Navštíveno během skvělého, prodlouženého víkendu v Izraeli
Společně s přáteli jsme se s Luboškem vypravili do Eilatu. Zde jsme měli ve městě zamluvené ubytování a díky půjčenému autu jsme mohli během našeho pobytu poznat mnoho nádherných míst a užívat si skvělé pohody.
To všechno lze shrnout do dvou slov "NAPROSTÁ PARÁDA".
Děkuji za pozvání na krásné místo. Koupačka v Rudém moři byla moc fajn.
Velké díky Luboškovi, Honzovi a Jardovi za milou společnost během nezapomenutelné návštěvy Izraele.2020-02-23T20:00:00ZFound its_and_y>#5882 - 23-02-2020 at 15:36
Uplynula dlouhá doba od našeho posledního výletu a my opět zatoužili někam vyrazit.
Druhý den jsme věnovali návštěvě Red kaňonu a městečku Eilat. Poslední den jsme věnovali návštěvě parku Timna, což je neuvěřitelný kus přírody. Všichni jsme byly hrozně rádi, že jsme zvolili návštěvu v únoru a ne červenci. Horko zde bylo neskutecne.
Díky kes a ukázku úžasného místa.

A long time has passed since our last trip and we wanted again to go somewhere. After the last frosty trip at November in Scotland, the choice fell on sunny Israel, where the sun is said to never stop shinening. My burned nose is the proof.
During three days we managed to make three long trips. On the first day we drove through several deserts and arrived as far as to the Dead Sea. That was golden dot of the day. The next day we spent a visit to the Red Canyon and the town of Eilat. The last day we spent a visit to Timna Park, where was an incredible piece of nature. We were all very pleased that we chose to visit this place in February and not July. The heat was here horrible.

You can use a sheet of paper, stamp, geocoin, mobile phone, T-shirt.... the important thing is that your nickname appears. Sorry, but without it your logs will be deleted=]

Wadi Rum is the largest ‘wadi’, dry valley, in Jordan. It is a diverse desert area, with tough rocky outcrops of red rock and flat areas covered in sand or salt. Many civilizations have inhabited the area, however always sparsely due to its tough and inhabitable nature. Today only a handful of Bedouin tribes live in the area, mostly in the Rum Village, which is the only population center for the area. Wadi Rum rose to fame in the west following the movie ‘Lawrence of Arabia‘ which followed the story of TE Lawrence when he fighting in then Transjordan during the Second World War.

Wadi Rum is a designated nature reserve and has an entrance fee required. There is also a Visitor Center at the entrance to the area.

Things to do: Wadi Rum is a desert area, with little in the way of permanent construction or modern facilities. The area is incredibly popular with tourists, however. The main activities here are jeep safaris through the desert, like this Wadi Rum Jeep Safari Tour. Most jeep tours are around 2 hours and cover the highlights of the area although longer half-day, full-day, or multi-day tours are also available.

Many visitors choose to spend one of their overnights in Jordan in a Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum, to gain a local experience. There are tens of different camps in the area, some of which are quite makeshift with locals just setting up tents in the desert, whilst others are more Western-style resorts, with cabins as well as tents, en-suite rooms, swimming pools, dining facilities, and so on.

Wadi Rum is also a major hiking area, with many trails through the desert drawing visitors. Rock climbing is also a draw to the region. Wadi Rum also attracts more extreme nature lovers, who carry out long hikes through Wadi Rum, as well as those looking for desert thrills with ATV’s or desert buggies, hot air balloons. It is recommended to take a tour guide in Wadi Rum.

--------

Thanks Peledenai for the cache.
2022-12-19T20:00:00ZFound itPapou27#12246# We spent several days in Wadi Rum, this desert is so huge and so rich in archaeology. We did most of the visits using 4 wheel drive Toyota Land Cruiser. We started with the visitors centre on Dec.14. I took a lot of photos some of which are attached.

Of course, sometimes we stopped in touristy places but in December we saw just a few people around. Found it on the way to most strange place in Jordan. What a shame the tourist change this place alot!!! Thank you for nice cache!!!2022-12-12T20:00:00ZFound itMMXXYet another trip with Lorok awaits. This time a cruise through the red sea. Visiting Egypt, Jordan and Saudi-Arabia. For us it was still warm and a weather worth wearing only T-Shirt, while locals already had jackets on. It was a good amount of fun, sights and geocaches.
So we decided to go to Wadi Rum, since both of us have been in Petra before. It was a fantastic trip with a lot of spectacular pictures.
Thank you Peledenai for placing and maintaining this cache!
TFTC!

Danke!
Genereller Teil:
In diesem Sinne allen viel Spaß beim Geocachen.2022-12-09T20:00:00ZFound itpinya3Visited and learned it alongside our friends team Catalunya Team during a short holiday in Kuwait and in Jordan.
What a magnificient place is this! I cellebrated my 23th birthday here, but that was back in 1987. Today I recalled that day when visiting back this country.
The photo is not very clear but we promise that we visited the place during a 3 day trek.

It’s time for our annual trip to distant lands.

A week at full speed that will make us discover at length and across this country rich in culture.
Geocaching, although not very present, will be strategically placed and we will travel through Amman the capital then Jerash, the dead sea, the Dana valley and its Wadi, Petra of course, the Wadi Rum and Madaba to finish.
I will take this opportunity to pass my 10,000 caches, which is a nice place for me.
